Abstract This paper deals with the problem of estimating the distributions of permeability and porosity in heterogeneous and multiphase petroleum reservoirs by matching the dynamic behavior. The dynamic data is in the form of field measurements from well testing, production history, interpreted 4-D seismic information, and other data such as correlations between permeability and porosity, geostatistics in the form of a variogram model and the inference of large scale geological structure. The issue was posed as an inverse problem and solved by using nonlinear parameter estimation. The procedure developed here is capable of processing all the information simultaneously and this results in a fast and efficient method. The procedure is also able to determine the uncertainty associated with the estimated permeability and porosity fields. Examples of different parameter types that may be estimated by this approach include: (a) individual block permeabilities and porosities; (b) geological objects such as channels and faults; (c) pilot points that form the basis of a kriged distribution; and (d) seismic attenuation values from 3-D seismic images. An important conclusion of this work is that the value of each piece of information does not reside in its isolated use but in the value it adds to integrated analysis of the complete set of information. Thus data that traditionally was considered to be of low information content for reservoir characterization becomes useful and enhances the value of the data set as a whole. Introduction Devising the optimal strategy for the development of an oil or gas reservoir is an …

Integration of Seismic Anisotropy and Reservoir Performance Data for Characterization of Naturally Fractured Reservoirs Using Discrete Feature Network Models

This paper proposes a method for quantitative integration of seismic (elastic) anisotropy attributes with reservoir performance data as an aid in characterization of systems of natural fractures in hydrocarbon reservoirs. This method is demonstrated through application to history matching of reservoir performance using synthetic test cases. Discrete Feature Network (DFN) modeling (Dershowitz et...

A Review of Reservoir Rock Typing Methods in Carbonate Reservoirs: Relation between Geological, Seismic, and Reservoir Rock Types

Carbonate reservoirs rock typing plays a pivotal role in the construction of reservoir static models and volumetric calculations. The procedure for rock type determination starts with the determination of depositional and diagenetic rock types through petrographic studies of the thin sections prepared from core plugs and cuttings. In the second step of rock typing study, electrofacies are deter...

SPE 154339 Reservoir Characterization of an Unconventional Reservoir by Integrating Microseismic, Seismic, and Well Log Data

Varied data types including geophysical data as well as well logs have been used frequently in the past to characterize reservoirs. However, the use of microseismic data as a potential source of useful information and its integration with conventional seismic data for reservoir characterization is an area of opportunity where properties predicted from the microseismic data can be used as a vita...

A New Method for Predicting Well Pattern Connectivity in a Continental Fluvial-delta Reservoir

The features of bad flow unit continuity and multiple layers emphesize the importance of a well pattern design for the development of a fluvial-delta reservoir. It is proposed a method to predict well pattern connectivity (WPC) based on the exploration and evaluation of wells. Moreover, the method helps evaluate the risk of well placement. This study initially establishes the parameters for cha...
